Meteora day trip from Athens (€79)
This is how most people see Meteora: a long day from Athens, 14 hours door to door, with four hours by coach each way. In return you organise nothing: the route is already planned around the day’s closures and you go inside three monasteries. It is the Meteora trip with the most reviews on Civitatis: 1,394, rated 8.6/10.
How the day goes
- 09:00, Athens Central Station (meeting point). The listing’s name mentions a train, but the transport is a coach with wifi.
- About four hours to Kalambaka, with a halfway stop for the toilet and a coffee.
- Lunch stop before heading up (lunch included or not, depending on the option).
- About four hours at Meteora: all six monasteries from outside and three inside, whichever are open that day. The guide explains on the coach and at the viewpoints; inside the monasteries you go on your own (or with the audio guide).
- Stop at the hermits’ caves, between the Pyxari and Amparia rocks.
- Back to Athens, arriving 14 hours after departure.
The four options
When booking you choose two things. Guide or audio guide: with the guide, a Spanish-speaking guide is with you all day except inside the monasteries; with the audio guide, the live guide speaks English and you carry a Spanish audio guide for the monuments. With or without lunch: lunch is a Greek main course chosen from ten, with salad, bread and water, and there are vegetarian and vegan options; without lunch, you get free time to eat on your own. The €79 price is the starting one (audio guide, no lunch); the other combinations show in the booking form.
What the listing doesn’t tell you (but the reviews do)
- Entrance fees are not included: €5 per person per monastery, cash only. For three monasteries, bring €15 a head in small notes.
- It is a hard day. Eight hours on a coach and, in one customer’s words, “pretty crowded”. With small children or limited mobility, better to sleep in Kalambaka.
- If your day is a Tuesday, Great Meteoron is seen from outside only (in winter, Wednesdays and Thursdays too). The listing warns you; our table tells you what happens on the other days.
- Compulsory dress code: shoulders and knees covered; women in a long skirt (lent at the door). Free cancellation up to 24 hours before.
From Thessaloniki (€95)
From the north there is a similar version: departure at 09:30 from Thessaloniki’s Makedonia bus station, scheduled coach with a change at Trikala to Kalambaka, where a local guide waits for a panoramic tour of over four hours around the monasteries; free time for lunch in Kalambaka and back the same way. 13 hours in all. Note: the coach legs are done on your own, unaccompanied, with the tickets you are given. Entrance fees extra (€5 each).
